Module 2 Formstorming

Module 2

Mapbox experimentation was the main focus of this part of the module, but also a large part of the project in general.

Week 6

This studio ghibli image was my background for many years I love the colour scheme. This green map is displaying a bunch of data points, but the colour scheme isn't very pleasant to look at. This colour scheme was grabbed directly from my favourite bug a stag beetle. I really like the colour scheme from the beetle with all the greens and browns so I wanted to look arouind Oakville with it! I wanted to try out the 3D version of the map but I didn't end up loving it it looks very janky. The whole globe looks very strange in other colours honestly, quite strange. It's very hard to read the labels in this colour scheme but it is interesting to look at. I really enjoy seeing different colour schemes and areas in the snow I think it makes everything look very good and neat. This colour scheme suffers the opposite issue of being too washed out and similar, it's hard to see the different areas. Week 7

This map shows the road lines in the Oakville area, it looks very interesting but it would suit a less bright colour scheme. This map displays more data in Oakville but this map struggles as it is not clear what data is on display here and the background has completely blended together. I believe this map is a heatmap of green space in Oakville, I like this map and so far heatmap has been my favourite method of showing data. This map clearly displays roadways and transit lines in Oakville and I really like the contrast and how visible the data is on this map. I love the way the colours have turned out on this map, the data is visible while still having a coherent colour scheme. I tried using the 3D feature for mapping data but I found that it made the information more difficult to identify as well as being hard on the computer. This map is showing all the buildings in Oakville and while this colour scheme is not my favourite I do like how visible the information is. I made a map of Oakville that I tried to simplify down to enough of just a cutout that I could potentially use this design for laser cutting. I followed the tutorials on how to get a good image of the lakes that could be used for laser cutting if it was cleaned up in illustrator. This is the design I made for the in class laser cutting activity. I kept the Sheridan and IXD logo because I do not own any Sheridan merch or IXD merch. This photo was taken in one of the early stages of the laser cutting process, it was super fun to watch and see how quickly the laser works across a surface. This photo was further along in the laser process as it had started on the text, it was crazy to see the details of how it makes the text. This is my final phone stand from the laser activity in class, I like it I think it's cute and I would make another one someday if I had enough time. I am now following the projection mapping tutorial here is me learning how to create masks. While browsing the effects and animations I really liked the way this brick animation looks. The triangle shatter animation was much more appropriate for the content the tutorial was working towards and I like how the blue looks. Putting the animation over the mask looks cool even with the white cast it creates. Learning to apply the animation over multiple masks was fun I like seeing how they all sync up. It's really neat to see how the images come up after the animation shatters and it doesn't poke through beforehand. Learning how to take the windows and doors out of the affected area was very cool, it really elavates the quality. I really like the final product of this activity, so much so I think I will choose this method for my own final. This is a laser cut ready map of the Greater Toronto Area, I really like the way the roads look like rivers in this strictly black and white format. I wanted to see what all of North America would look like formatted like I was going to laser cut it. This is the whole area I grew up in, the big city I live near in it's entirety and the small town I grew up in, honestly cool to see. This is a laser cut ready map of my home town to decide if this is what I wanted to pursue as my final, ultimately I did not go with this.

Spatial Workshop 1

I do not like this staircase and I never have during my time attending Sheridan College. Throughout spatial workshop one the main lens I was looking at these spaces with was whether or not they were pleasant and fit in with the rest of the school. This staircase is right in the centre of the school by the bookstore but it’s such a concrete eyesore we can defiantly improve this.
Project Video Link
The J wing is very committed to being concrete but unfortunately the combination of a lack of colour and a lack of seating has made it a very unpopular place. It doesn’t feel very pleasant or welcoming and I feel like that could be improved with simple things like more places to sit. While I do enjoy the pool noodle hallway as it adds much needed colour to the J wing I feel like it could still benefit from more colour and more places to sit. It is not a bad space it just could be more purposefully used.

Spatial Workshop 2

This little carpet pit in the C wing is a heavily used area you can even see it in use as I am photographing it, however it seems like all this use has caused wear and tear. The carpet is completely worn down in many places as well as barely providing comfort where it still does work. The ceramics sale also usually happens here and they always struggle for spaces, this pit needs tables! This door leads to the Student Union building but from the outside it barely even looks like you are allowed to go in here. It’s not clearly marked and relies on people already knowing the campus layout, while many people do already know, many people such as visitors or new students do not. It would benefit from other changes such as a fresh coat of paint to make it look more like an area meant to be a hub of the school. For my redesign of this SSU door I focused on achievable small changes that make a big difference. The small SSU sign originally above the door has been replaced with large very clear signage in the Sheridan colour scheme. I have also painted over the faded red paint with Sheridan white to stick with the established colours. Planter boxes and plants add some life to the design.
